Ministry of Industry: Green Industry Standards for Sustainable Development

The Ministry of Industry implements the Green Industry Standard (GIS) to enhance the competitiveness of the manufacturing industry while adhering to the principles of sustainable development. According to Andi Rizaldi, Head of the Standardization and Industrial Services Policy Agency (BSKJI) at the Ministry of Industry, the adoption of green industry aims to address challenges like climate change and decarbonization. The Green Industry Policy encompasses three pillars of sustainability: economic, environmental, and social aspects. The implementation of GIS is expected to be a key instrument in achieving sustainable development goals (SDGs), Environmental Social Governance (ESG), Indonesia's Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC), and achieving a Net Zero Emission in the manufacturing sector by 2050. This is intended to strengthen market access, financing, and drive decarbonization targets.

GIS is also expected to safeguard domestic products from regulatory changes in export destination countries, particularly related to the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), focusing on products such as aluminum, steel, and hydrogen. Additionally, GIS aims to meet Domestic Content Level (TKDN) requirements and serve as an instrument for international trade, including Non-Tariff Measures (NTMs) and compliance with Rules of Origin (COO) in free trade agreements. Andi hopes that GIS can contribute to achieving targets in priority industries and enhance industrial competitiveness while fulfilling the country's commitments to NDC and Net Zero Emission. Through these measures, the Ministry of Industry seeks to ensure that Indonesia's manufacturing industry operates sustainably while strengthening its position in the global market.
