PT BYD Motor Indonesia (BYD) has announced plans to build an electric vehicle (EV) factory in the Subang Smartpolitan industrial zone owned by PT Surya Semesta Internusa Tbk (SSIA). The factory will cover over 108 hectares and aims to produce 150,000 EVs annually. The land handover is scheduled for August 2024, with construction targeted to begin in January 2026. BYD's President Director, Eagle Zhao, revealed a total investment of USD 1 billion in Indonesia during the Periklindo Electric Vehicle Show (PEVS) 2024. Subang Smartpolitan was chosen for its area, infrastructure, and accessibility, being close to major transportation routes like the Cikopo-Palimanan Toll Road and the Patimban Access Toll Road. Abednego Purnomo, VP of Sales at Subang Smartpolitan, believes BYD's presence will attract more global companies to invest in Indonesia's manufacturing sector.
Previously, Hyundai Motor Company established a factory in GIIC, Cikarang, with an investment of USD 1.55 billion, capable of producing 150,000 vehicles annually. Hyundai is also building a battery pack factory in GIIC with a capacity of 1.4 gigawatt-hours, set to operate in 2024. Wuling Motors, in the same area, invested USD 1.1 billion to build a factory producing 120,000 EVs per year. The interest of global automotive manufacturers in Indonesia's EV ecosystem highlights the country's potential as an EV manufacturing hub. This mutualistic relationship between automotive manufacturers and industrial zone developers is crucial for Indonesia's economic growth. The investments also align with Indonesia's goal to transition to cleaner energy sources and reduce dependence on fossil fuels. The presence of these factories contributes to job creation, technology transfer, and the development of local supply chains. Indonesia's strategic location and abundant natural resources, like nickel, position it favorably in the global EV market. As Indonesia continues to attract investments in the EV sector, it solidifies its position as a key player in the global automotive industry.
