Indonesian Motorcycle Exports Experience Increase as of March 2024

The Indonesian Motorcycle Industry Association (AISI) reported an increase in motorcycle exports in March 2024, with 43,000 units shipped abroad to meet export demands. Throughout March 2024, a total of 43,839 units were exported, marking a rise from February (38,375 units) and January (34,991 units). Cumulatively, Indonesia exported 117,205 motorcycles in the first quarter of 2024. However, compared to the first quarter of the previous year, there was a decline. In the first quarter of 2023, 121,858 units were exported, comprising 39,269 units in January, 45,627 units in February, and 36,962 units in March. Scooter models remained dominant in exports, although their percentage did not match domestic sales. Additionally, significant quantities of moped and sport models were also exported.

In the first quarter of 2024, 26.16% of exported motorcycles were mopeds, followed by sport motorcycles at 24.84%, and scooters, the most exported model, at 49%. In comparison, scooter sales dominated the Indonesian market in the first quarter, accounting for 90.50%, followed by sport models (4.77%) and mopeds (4.73%). The trend of declining Indonesian motorcycle exports has persisted since 2021. In 2021, Indonesia exported 803,931 units, followed by 743,551 units in 2022, and 570,004 units in 2023. Previously, AISI Secretary-General Hari Budianto attributed the continuous decline in motorcycle exports to many destination countries seeking to produce motorcycles domestically.
