Commencing Rebound, Forestry Products Exports Reach USD 3.5 Billion

Indonesia's forestry sector experienced a notable rebound in export growth, with January-March 2024 exports reaching USD 3.5 billion, marking an 8.3% increase compared to the same period in the previous year. This positive momentum suggests a promising outlook for the national forestry industry, with hopes to match the USD 13.16 billion total exports achieved in 2023. Major contributors to forestry exports include pulp, paper, and wood panels. Notably, the growth in exports comes after a challenging period in 2023, where negative growth was recorded for most of the year. The Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK) has set a moderate export target of USD 10 billion for the year. KLHK's Acting Director General for Sustainable Forest Management, Agus Justianto, emphasized the importance of maintaining this positive trend amidst global uncertainties, including geopolitical tensions and post-pandemic economic recovery. Agus highlighted the need for continued efforts to anticipate market conditions and sustain export growth.

Indroyono Soesilo, Chairman of the Indonesian Forestry Community Communication Forum (FKMPI) and the Indonesian Forestry Entrepreneurs Association (APHI), stressed the significance of opening up new markets to support export performance. He cited India as one of the growing markets, with a 14% year-on-year increase in exports in the first two months of 2024. Indonesia's Sustainable Legal Verification System (SVLK), now equipped with geolocation provisions, enhances traceability of wood origin, contributing to market confidence. As Indonesia navigates global challenges, maintaining export growth remains crucial for the forestry sector's sustained development. Overall, the rebound in Indonesia's forestry exports underscores resilience in the sector despite previous setbacks. With strategic initiatives and market diversification efforts, Indonesia aims to sustain export growth, contributing to economic resilience and the continued development of the forestry industry.
