Exports up by Over 30% After the Pandemic: "Made in Italy is Our Strength"

The post-pandemic period has presented formidable challenges to Italy's industrial sector, including the Suez Canal crisis, rising freight costs, geopolitical tensions, inflation, and market slowdowns. However, Matteo Zoppas, President of ICE (Italian Trade Agency), underscores the resilience of the "Made in Italy" brand, which has demonstrated remarkable adaptability in the face of adversity. Despite initial disruptions, Italian companies have responded positively to challenges, with export revenues in 2023 surpassing pre-pandemic levels by over 30%, reaching IDR 626 billion. This resilience, coupled with the global appeal of Italian products, has enabled the country to weather the storm and maintain its competitive edge. The recent Suez Canal crisis, a vital trade artery for Italy's fashion, food, automotive, and machinery sectors, initially impacted costs but has since normalized. Companies have adjusted by factoring in additional transit time for shipments circumnavigating Africa. The long-term consequences remain uncertain, contingent on the effectiveness of countermeasures and the crisis's duration.

Beyond traditional sectors like food and fashion, Italy's industrial prowess extends to aerospace supplies, green technologies, life sciences, and artificial intelligence. These silent sectors, often overlooked, serve as beacons of innovation and excellence, bolstering Italy's reputation as an industrial leader on the global stage. While Germany remains a crucial market, Italy is diversifying its export destinations, tapping into markets in the Balkans, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, Latin America, and soon North Africa. The Mattei Plan, aimed at expanding Italy's presence in North Africa, underscores the country's proactive approach to market expansion. ICE plays a pivotal role in supporting Italian companies during challenging times, organizing pavilions at international trade fairs, conducting promotional initiatives worldwide, and facilitating connections with international buyers. ICE's ongoing restructuring aims to enhance its effectiveness in providing support and guidance to Italian businesses navigating complex global markets.
