The Ministry of Cooperatives and SMEs (Kemenkop UKM), the Ministry of Transportation, the National Standardization Agency (BSN), and various stakeholders are advocating for the Indonesian National Standard (SNI) for high-performance motorcycle exhausts, known as local aftermarket. The SNI for aftermarket exhausts is expected to be completed by 2024. During the Demo Day for Aftermarket Exhausts at Smesco Indonesia Building, Gatot Subroto, Pancoran, South Jakarta, on Monday (25/3/2024), Deputy for Standardization Development at BSN, Hendro Kusumo, expressed that, according to societal needs, the SNI could be expedited this year if necessary. Hendro further explained that they would fully support the SNI for aftermarket exhausts, involving various parties such as aftermarket exhaust manufacturers associations and the government in formulating the standard. With the SNI, he noted that the quality of local aftermarket exhaust products could improve, potentially enabling them to be sold overseas.
Manufacturers complying with the SNI can leverage it as a competitive advantage over non-standard high-performance exhausts. "In natural law, society will also avoid non-standard products. Once the standards are met, the law enforcement agencies will consider them compliant," he clarified. Meanwhile, Minister of Cooperatives and SMEs (Menkop UKM), Teten Masduki, disclosed that the potential economic value of the local exhaust industry has reached IDR 60 billion. With the SNI, he anticipates a surge in turnover. Hence, the government aims to support the local exhaust industry. "With standardization, turnover is expected to increase. If we look at automotive growth, it's around 7.64%. That's just an estimation. If usage continues to grow, it's significant. With the SNI in place, people won't hesitate to buy local aftermarket exhausts because they won't fear being fined," he concluded.
