ID Food Pushes Seaweed Exports to China

ID Food, a state-owned enterprise (SOE) in the food sector, is actively promoting the enhancement of value-added products in Indonesia's fisheries and marine sector, particularly by boosting seaweed exports to China. According to Ferry Fardiansyah, VP of Trade and Logistics at ID Food, the prospects for seaweed and fisheries exports to China are highly promising. To capitalize on these opportunities, ID Food is strategically engaging in various initiatives, including participation in international exhibitions and exploring partnerships with Chinese companies. During a recent visit to China, ID Food participated in the International Cross-Border E-commerce exhibition and conducted business visits, resulting in the identification of numerous potential buyers with a collaboration potential valued at IDR 64 billion. Among these potential partnerships, Jianxi Lemon Biotechnology Co. Ltd. stands out, with plans to engage in seaweed export-import cooperation. The initial agreement targets the sale of 1,200 Metric Tons (MT) of seaweed annually, with the first shipment of 100 tons scheduled for April 2024, focusing on Cottonii seaweed.

Ferry emphasizes that this endeavor marks a significant step towards expanding seaweed exports to China, a key market for seaweed globally. To ensure the sustainability of these collaborations, preparations are underway for the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Jianxi Lemon Biotechnology Co. Ltd., laying the groundwork for broader cooperation. In addition to showcasing seaweed products, ID FOOD presented a diverse range of products, including seafood, premium coffees from various regions, spices, coconut palm oil, and salt during the business visit and Cross-Border E-commerce exhibition held from March 18-20, 2024. Seaweed has emerged as a flagship export commodity for ID Food, with continuous efforts to ramp up its export volume. In 2023, through its subsidiary PT Perusahaan Perdagangan Indonesia (PPI), ID Food exported 212 MT of Eucheuma Cottoni seaweed. These exports primarily originate from domestic farmers directly engaged by the company. Ferry anticipates that the latest export collaboration will further boost seaweed export volumes this year. To support these export activities, ID Food maintains specialized seaweed storage facilities in Tanjung Perak with a capacity of 6,000 MT and in Buduran with a capacity of 700 MT.
