Indonesia's Ministry of Industry Advocates Green Practices in Manufacturing for Environmental Sustainability

The Ministry of Industry (Kemenperin) in Indonesia is actively promoting the adoption of green industry principles among manufacturing companies. The primary objective is to prioritize efficiency and effectiveness in production processes while aligning industrial development with environmental sustainability. According to Andi Rizaldi, the Head of the Standardization and Industrial Services Policy Agency at Kemenperin, green industries offer numerous benefits, including cost reduction in operations, energy and water savings. Additionally, green practices contribute to conserving limited natural resources, minimizing negative environmental impacts, maintaining ecosystem balance, and fostering the development of eco-friendly technologies. Rizaldi emphasized that to regulate energy resource utilization, the government has implemented Government Regulation Number 33 of 2023 on Energy Conservation. The main goal is to ensure sustainable national energy availability through the application of efficient energy technologies, rational energy utilization, and promoting an energy-saving culture.

In line with the implementation of Government Regulation 3 of 2023, Kemenperin supports the Boosting Energy Efficiency Practices for the Industrial Sector (BENEFITS) project. The primary aim is to strengthen energy management in the industrial sector more comprehensively, accelerating industrial decarbonization and energy transition. Managed by the Indonesian Institute for Energy Economics (IIEE), in collaboration with government partners such as the Green Industry Center at Kemenperin and supporting partner ViriyaENB, BENEFITS targets building an Energy Management System in five industries, reaching at least 70-80% readiness for ISO 50001 certification by the third year. The project includes training for Energy Managers and Energy Auditors (Level Awareness Seminar) for 25 Parent Companies. BENEFITS also provides technical assistance for Energy Management Systems (EnMS) in the industrial sector, focusing on industries with energy consumption equal to or exceeding 4000 TOE per year. Andi concluded that the project encourages industries to develop internal audit understanding and basic energy management. This ensures that financially stable companies can implement and sustain energy management systems effectively.
