Jonan: No More Coal Power Plants Construction

Thursday, 12 April, 2018 | Energy and Mineral Resources Ignasius Jonan has decided there will be no more coal-fueled power plant construction, especially in the island of Java. The decision was made on the basis of the Indonesian government’s commitment to anticipating climate changes.

"In Java, there will be no more commissioning nor agreements for coal power plants,” Jonan said in a written statement Tempo received on Wednesday, April 11.

Jonan said he does not want to worsen air pollution by constructing more coal plants.

“We urge miners to build mine-mouth power plants. Thymine-mouth done in Southeast Sulawesi and Kalimantan,” he said, stressing that environmental issues are a main focs that requires synergy with the energy sector.

Jonan said that mining companies are demanded to adjust their business activities with existing environment policies. The minister also asserted that he would give firm penalties to companies or individuals who break the rules.
