Indonesia Achieved Food Self-Sufficiency, Delaying Rice Import Plans Until 2026

Observers have noted that Indonesia has reached a stage of food self-sufficiency, with domestic production meeting domestic demand. The Centre for Reform on Economic (Core) Indonesia's agricultural observer, Eliza Mardian, stated that, according to the Food and Agriculture Organisation's definition, Indonesia is still considered to be self-sufficient in terms of food, with domestic farmers supplying 90% of requirements. However, the viability of achieving long-term food self-sufficiency remains a concern. Therefore, it is vital that the country maintains its food self-sufficiency. Previously, the Coordinating Minister for Food, Zulkifli Hasan, announced that Indonesia would no longer be importing rice until 2026, due to Bulog's successful initiative of directly absorbing farmers' production. As of May 2025, Indonesia has secured 3.9 million tonnes of rice. Prior to this, in 2023, the government was required to import rice in order to meet domestic demand, a consequence of the inadequate absorption of farmers' grain.

In order to maintain sufficient production levels, the government must mitigate climate change, in conjunction with improvements to irrigation infrastructure. Furthermore, farmers must utilise varieties that are both productive and resilient to climate change. The key to success in this area lies in the provision of intensive mentoring and counselling, complemented by the effective integration of technological innovations. Consequently, farmers can increase their productivity, quality and welfare. Accordingly, the Indonesian government will be directing its efforts towards the promotion of protein-rich food commodities, with a particular emphasis on fish farming, shrimp, capture fish, salt, and fishing villages.
