On 17 March 2025, the President of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto, officially launched PT Freeport Indonesia's precious metal refinery plant in the Java Integrated Industrial and Port Estate Special Economic Zone in Gresik, East Java. The plant is the first gold smelter in Indonesia, and the world's first modern gold refining facility integrated from upstream to downstream, from mining, processing and refining. The precious metal refinery plant has been designed to accelerate the downstream process, with an investment value of USD 630 million or IDR 10 trillion. The Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), Bahlil Lahadalia, stated that the gold production from this plant will come from 3 million concentrates, with an expected yield of 50-60 tonnes of gold. The precious metal refinery facility has a processing capacity of 6,000 tonnes of anode sludge per year, with a production capacity of up to 52 tonnes of gold. Anode sludge is a by-product of the concentrate processing process.
