The North Sumatra Rubber Association (Gapkindo Sumut) reported that natural rubber exports from the region reached 20,737.4 tons in February 2025, reflecting a 19.96% decrease from 25,910 tons in January. This decline was primarily driven by weakening demand from China, one of Indonesia's major rubber consumers, due to economic slowdown and trade tensions with the U.S.. Despite this, exports saw a 2.23% increase compared to February 2024.
Additionally, high rainfall despite the dry season disrupted rubber tapping activities, further limiting supply. However, rising rubber prices in February brought renewed interest among smallholder farmers. The top export destinations included Japan (31.29%), the U.S. (23.23%), and Brazil (8.40%), with 12 European countries accounting for 6.96% of total exports. Gapkindo remains optimistic about market recovery and stable production in the coming months.
