The Indonesian government, led by Coordinating Minister for Food Affairs Zulkifli Hasan, plans to reduce import quotas for several key commodities in 2025 to support the utilization of domestic resources. Industrial salt, particularly for the Chlor Alkali Plant (CAP) industry, will see a quota reduction from 2.5 million tons to 1.7 million tons. Zulkifli stated that efforts would focus on improving local salt processing capabilities to meet industrial requirements. "We must work hard over the next two years to produce and process salt locally for industrial use," Zulkifli emphasized during a coordination meeting at Graha Mandiri, Jakarta, on Monday, 9 December 2024. Despite acknowledging the high specifications required for industrial salt, he expressed optimism in meeting domestic demands, citing past achievements in technology development.
Corn import quotas for industrial use will also be slashed, from 1.7 million tons to 900,000 tons. Zulkifli highlighted the importance of improving the quality of locally produced corn to fulfill industrial needs. The government has also set a reduction target for industrial sugar imports, cutting the usual 6 million tons down to 3.45 million tons. Zulkifli stressed the need for stronger agricultural productivity to meet industry standards and reduce dependency on imports. These policy adjustments are expected to boost local agriculture and industry while reducing reliance on foreign supply.
