Indonesia Emerges as a Net Exporter of Halal Products

The sharia economy and halal industry are increasingly viewed as new sources of economic growth, not only domestically but also on a global scale. The global Muslim population is estimated to continue growing to 2.2 billion people or 26.5% of the world's total population by 2030. This rise will be accompanied by a growing demand for halal products and services. In 2020, Indonesia exported a total of USD 46.7 billion worth of halal products, including food, fashion, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics, to the global market. In aggregate, Indonesia can be categorised as a net exporter of halal products. The Minister noted that Indonesia's exports of halal products to member countries of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) reached USD 48.3 billion in 2021 and were projected to increase to USD 53.8 billion in 2022.

Based on this data, to optimise the opportunities in the halal product market and to achieve the growth of the halal industry as expected, strong collaboration and synergy among all stakeholders are needed to create a robust national ecosystem that supports the growth of the halal industry. According to the Minister of Industry, to support the ecosystem's growth and development of the national halal industry, the Ministry of Industry has incorporated Empowering the Halal Industry as part of the National Industry Policy (KIN) established under Presidential Regulation number 74 of 2022 regarding the National Industry Policy for 2020-2024. The Ministry has also added Empowering the Halal Industry in the revision of the Master Plan for National Industrial Development (RIPIN) for 2015-2035. This policy is vital to assist Indonesia in maintaining its position as a global leader in the sharia economy, showing consistent positive developments year after year. Referring to The State of the Global Islamic Economy Report 2022, Indonesia ranked 2nd in 2022 in the halal food sector, after previously holding the 4th position in 2021. In the modest fashion sector, Indonesia maintained its 3rd position throughout 2021-2022. However, when looking at overall sharia economic indicators, Indonesia still holds the 4th position globally during 2021-2022. Acting Secretary General of the Ministry of Industry, stated that by the end of 2023, they had trained 940 halal supervisors and 154 halal auditors. In addition, the Ministry of Industry aims to provide halal certification facilitation to 2,000 industries, also establishing 17 accredited Halal Inspection Institutions (LPH) to serve the public from Aceh to Ambon.
