The Fisheries Sector on Nias Island Has Prospects

Deputy Director of the Institute for Development of Economics and Finance (Indef) Eko Listiyanto revealed that the development and development of the fisheries sector has prospects in accelerating the economy of Nias Island. "What has not been and needs to be worked on in Nias is the fisheries sector. Nias Island itself is known as a center for the fisheries and marine sector," said Eko when contacted in Jakarta, Monday (9/1). The objective of the BUMN Minister, he continued, was to promote the economic development of Nias Island. "One of the stimulations can be from fish production which is considered to have prospects for accelerating the Nias economy," he said.

Apart from fisheries, he said, Nias is also considered to have potential as an attractive tourism destination which of course needs to be supported by superior human resources. "Nias in general has good natural potential as a tourist destination. In order to become a tourist destination, Nias needs superior human resources. Several places in Nias are indeed ready to become tourism destinations based on natural panoramas, tourist villages and so on. In order to become a tourist destination, Nias needs superior human resources," said Eko. Previously, SOE Minister Erick Thohir wanted to develop the economy of Nias Island so that the island's economic condition could improve immediately and had talked with regional leaders about long-term development. It was stated that there were a number of alternatives, including making Nias a tourist center such as Labuan Bajo and Mandalika, or becoming an integrated marine area.
The economic condition of Nias Island became the emphasis of the BUMN Minister, bearing in mind that the four regencies on the westernmost island in Indonesia are classified as underdeveloped, including when compared to other regencies and cities in North Sumatra.
